Clinical significance

The prevalence of CMBs shows an increasing trend as we age. At younger than 50 years of age, it is estimated that 2 to 5% of the healthy population will have a single CMB. However, for those older than 70 years of age, that number climbs higher than 20%. With an aging global population, it is critical in many treatments to know if CMBs are present.
For example, with stroke patients the use of anti-platelet may or may not be advisable if evidence of previous bleeding is present. CMBs are also observed in traumatic brain injury, neurodegenerative diseases, and dementia. The number of CMBs and their timeline of development may be used as a precursor for diagnosis of dementia and vascular disorders.
By helping to limit or even remove the interpreter bias in the detection of CMBs this module will encourage better treatment options and by providing the associated metrics the longitudinal information will be critical in both the clinical setting and in clinical trials.
