How does SPIN WMH work

Most current WMH semi-automated approaches require multiple MR data sets. This requires more time clinically. We propose to use only a 3D FLAIR to determine lesion, brain, and ventricle volumes automatically and to label the lesion type. We proposed a high spatial frequency suppression method only using 3D FLAIR images. This has been implemented and incorporated into SPIN. In order to achieve more accurate segmentation results, we also implemented several functions in the post-processing to assist manual segmentation. They include: “mask modifies (MODI)”, “contour drawing (PEN)” and “click pick up (PICK)”. We are currently testing this on a series of 138 MS patients to compare it to a manual approach. No manufacturer yet offers automated WMH segmentation and even our manual segmentation would compete their functions.
